empowers the player to explore an ancient, mythical Mayan world as a Demi-God. This 2D platformer challenges the player to use their light beams to create temporary new platforms to navigate the world. My work on this project focused on creating the initial mechanic and then building the two levels around empowering the player to experiment with the mechanic.
Integrated Platforming and Combat Mechanic
As part of a team of four people (two artists, one programmer, one designer) I was responsible for creating the two levels and the core game concept. The team wanted to create a platformer that challenged the player to think about distances between platforms in a new way, so I came up with the idea of integrating combat and movement into one action. Every light beam can kill one of the enemies as well as form a solid walkable platform for the player. Not only does this make the game easier to pick up, it also simplified our UI.
I focused on creating a condensed experience for Morn in that I wanted an implicit tutorial level and a challenging main level. Both levels challenge the player with igniting all the torches in order to restore light to the world. The first level gives the player simple puzzles that they can only solve by learning each mechanic as they go forward.
The system design behind the light beam mechanic allows the player to use the beams in unique ways. Through the level layout and system implementation we achieved our goal of creating a game that is fun to play with, not just fun to play.
